The Words (2012)

TPR-Words-Briefcase

I really liked the Words so prepare yourself for a really quick review. It’s like when you want to buy something but you can’t help but show how much you like it so there’s not much point negotiating.

Writer Clay Hammond (Dennis Quaid of The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia) reads excerpts from his latest book, acting as a narrative to the story of literary intrigue. Hammonds tells of Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper), a struggling writer who moves to New York City with girlfriend and eventual wife, Dora (Zoe Saldana – purr-noise here). He finds that no one will publish his novel because while it is quite good, it is not marketable by an unknown. Dejected, he breaks down and reluctantly gets a job.

While on vacation in Paris, he buys an old leather briefcase only to discover later that there is a manuscript in it…Let the joyride begin.

Bradley Cooper has come a long way from Alias. I’m not sure if he’s done anything, including Alias that I haven’t liked. He’s the anti Ryan Reynolds and will hopefully be smart enough to never be a super-hero in a super-hero film. The Story in this thoroughly enjoyable and flawless film scores a +3. The Look achieves everything it is required to with great film-work and well framed scenes. The Overall Casting with the aforementioned as well as Jeremy Irons scores again at +2. Every rôle in this movie was really well acted. The Commitment to Genre which fits in somewhere between Limitless (2011) and Deathtrap (1982) and also deserves a +2.

Subtotal: +10

Did I mention how much I enjoyed watching this movie?
